Code Name: ACTRESS.

Meet Chinwe Nwokolo
       Code Name: Actress

The eldest of five girls, I was very timid and quiet as a child, amongst other people. But at home, I was talkative, loud, a day dreamer, imaginative, and maybe some what irritating.
My acting career got started after I left university. I went in to higher education with becoming an entertainment journalist in mind, but after being asked by a film student to star in a short film, the draw of the art pulled me in and I enrolled at Identity Drama School.

I was very shy as a child, and it was my primary school teacher, Mrs Wilson that brought me out of my shell when she started casting me as lead in all the assembly plays, mainly in Mrs Wilsons favourites, Anansi the Spider and Friends. I was never strong at Mathematics and science. Whenever those subjects were on the menu, I would drift into another world. But once it came to drawing, painting, English, I excelled, those were my strengths.
Every parents evening Mum and Dad would be told the same thing, ‘Shes a strong sudent, and has so much potential, but just easily distracted.’ If it was not some some sort of art or writing I some how became detached.

I can credit Mrs Wilson for giving me my first taste of acting, as well as being totally addicted to films and tv shows of the eighties. I remember watching Jason and the Argonauts, Ben Hur, Teen Wolf, The Cosby Show, Only Fools and Horses, and Desmonds to name a few and saying, ‘This is what I want to do!’ But by the time I went to secondary school, and college, I had in mind that I wanted to be an entertainment journalist. I would save my money and buy magazines like, Smash Hits, Word Up and Right On, and imagine interviewing singers and tv and film personalities. So when I got to University, I took a degree in Communication Studies so that I could start to realize this dream. In my final year came the distraction, in the form of acting.

A film student approached me to be in one of his short films. He knew I had acted on secondary school and college, and he believed I had ‘the look’ of the character he wanted to portray, so I agreed. I had no idea that the acting bug would come flying at me in full force! It was the first time I had done anything with cameras and lighting, and it excited me. From that moment on all I ever wanted to do was act.

I was looking through the Voice newspaper, and came across a small advert. ‘Are you interested in acting? Think you could be on stage, tv or film? Then enrolled at Identity drama school, at the Identity Drama School.’ I called the number, and got called in to do an audition, where I presented a monologue from Romeo and Juliet. I cannot say it was the most amazing piece of acting I have presented. I was little rusty, but they saw something in me, and gave me a place in the school. It was there that I started to grow as an actress, I became fearless and got the lead as a HIV carrier in my first play ‘Here Today, Gun Tomorrow.’

I joined the Identity agency, and got made my first TV debut, in the BBC pilot, West 10 LDN, where I starred along side the very talented Ashley Madekwe (Diary Of a Secret Call Girl, Revenge, Salem). It was the first time I had experienced people approaching me on the street, which to me was the most surreal of feelings. The night it was first screened on television. My mum and Dad received the most calls in one night I had ever witnessed. I loved seeing them so proud f my achievement. I think that was maybe the first time they realized how real this ‘acting thing’ was.
Since then I have gone from strength to strength and graced the stages of London, from the Royal Court theatre, Riverside studios and Soho, as well as international advertising campaigns.

Today I have a new agent and as tough as this industry is, I still have every intention to emulate my favourites, Chiwetal Ejiofor, Cate Blanchett, Denzel Washington, Sigouney Weaver, again just to name a few. My passion for it runs deep. It’s the first thing I think about in the morning and the last at night, and despite ups and downs, and rejections from time to time, I know I will get my YES. It can be a scary industry, so I am so grateful I have other friends in it too, and we are able to support and uplift each other. My family, know it’s coming too, they do not know when, but I have told them to stay prepared.

My dream is to star in a HBO production, and to one day work with my favourite directors Martin Scorcese and Steve Mcqueen. Anything else that comes with those would be the sweetest cherry on top.

How to increase SALES in Business

The Marketing Concept is an effective way to increase sale and profits in any Business.
What is the Marketing concept?
This is when you achieve cooperate goals by MEETING and EXCEEDING customer needs better than the Competition.

Applying the marketing concept in reality has to do with knowing what your customer needs, fulfilling their needs and adding something extra into filling those needs. This will make and keep your customers happy, thus giving you competitive advantage over your competitors.

The Key components of Marketing concept are:

Customer orientation.
Integrated effort.
Achieving goals.

All three components go hand in hand to create CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. Every Business activity whether it is a Product or Service should focus on providing customer satisfaction. Why is customer satisfaction essential?  It is simple, if a customer is Happy with Services you rendered, they will always come back. For example you go to a saloon to braid or cut your hair, you had it done nicely and on top of that you were offered a cold drink. More likely than not, you will go back to that Saloon to have your hair done again. Why? Because they were able to  meet and exceeded your needs.

Customer loyalty cannot be earned by Advertising or aggressive sale effort. The Marketing concept is how customer loyalty is earned. Customers are so satisfied that they come back and even refer you to friends and as most of us know word of mouth is one of the best form of Product and Service Promotion.

How to apply the Marketing Concept to your Business:
Customer Orientation: Cooperate activities should be focused on providing customer satisfaction.

Integrated Effort: All staffs in an Organization take responsibility for creating customer satisfaction.

Goal achievement: The belief that Cooperate goals can be achieved through customer satisfaction.

In Essenes the marketing concept is placing the customer and customer satisfaction at the centre of your Business. All activities of a company should be focused on meeting and exceeding customer needs. If you make your customer happy, they will grow your sale numbers, which pushes your Business in the right direction towards achieving its Cooperate goal.

Advertising will grow your BRAND, no doubt but the marketing concept however will increase your SALES. So don't just produce and advertise your Product or Services, apply the Marketing concept as well to achieve your cooperate goals.

"Your Business is not a Product or Services but your Customers".

HOW FAR IS THE JOURNEY TO THE PROMISED LAND?

“While waiting for a Moses to lead us to the Promised Land, we have forgotten how to walk.”
- Wendell Johnson
Young lawyers enter into the legal profession expecting to find a land filled with milk and honey, due to the time, hard work, expensive books and ‘plenty reading’ they put in to be a learned member of the Bar.  It is the perception that once one becomes a lawyer, all the years of hard work would be rewarded in kind. Though not far from the truth, but this has become a mirage in the Nigerian legal system. A new wig freshly called to the Bar must understand that the profession is not a promised land in itself but the beginning of the journey.
The young lawyer’s friends i.e. the young generation in the society constantly ask difficult but constructive questions, like “why does it take more than 10 years to finally dispose of a case from commencement to appeals?” “How come as a Nigerian I don’t require legal services except when taken to court or in police custody?” “How is it possible for one to steal a car and get three years’ imprisonment while another offender steals N1 billion and pays a fine of N750,000?” Unsatisfactory or unconvincing answers to these everyday questions have led to the populace losing confidence in the judiciary and in turn inhibits the improvement of the legal profession.
What truly is responsible for the slow progression of a young lawyer in the legal profession? This writer does not align himself with the school of thought that low monthly wages is the major reason for the slow progression of new wigs in the legal profession. While the average pay check of a young lawyer is appalling and needs review and increment, a young lawyer’s source of income should not be restricted to monthly pay checks.
Every young lawyer in the legal profession cannot be paid six digits monthly as that is only akin to stopping a train by standing in front of it. The true value of a lawyer is in his skills and ability to use the skills to his benefit. One must understand that the legal profession favours some differently than others. Some young lawyers are well paid by reputable law firms, others are employed by multi-nationals and some just have to walk their way up the legal ladder by their wit and passion for the profession.
The journey to the promised land as envisaged by a new wig is farther than expected because the judicial framework of attaining justice in Nigeria is old-fashioned as it is not at par with the contemporary realities of the 21st century. The provisions of the law used in the distant past when crime rates were low, the population was far below 160 million Nigerians and the economy was not as challenging as it now is, and still the same is used today though with minor amendments. Take for instance, some laws still have fines of N20 (twenty Naira) as punishment.
In current political turf, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria intends to seek legal redress against his suspension with his tenure coming to an end barely four months from today. One is forced to ask if it is possible with our current congested courts, to get an interpretation of the legality or illegality of the acts of the president within four months. Politicians have now taken to using the honourable courts as a political delay strategy: ‘By the way when would he get judgment, even if he gets judgment, we would appeal’.
This has in turn affected the mindset of the populace from seeking redress from court, the Nigerian citizen doesn’t really see the significance of engaging the services of a lawyer as they feel it’s only a waste of time and resources. Those who opt for the services of a lawyer are comfortable with the services of the old wig compared to the new wig, and they cannot be blamed as such is the reality of the Nigerian society.
With or without adequate monthly wage, the legal profession with its fertile pool of knowledge has the capacity to provide for the basic amenities of a new wig without such young lawyer having to wait 5- 7 years in practice.
The Nigerian legal frame work needs a complete reformation, reorganisation and restructuring. Certain laws need be repealed and more efficient ones enacted. More courts with specialized jurisdiction should be established like a court for electoral offences, money laundering and embezzlement; certain cause of action should be given accelerated hearing et al.
Nigeria is a country blessed with the financial, human and intellectual resources to have the best legal framework in the continent and yet is still far from such achievement.
The journey to the promised land will continue to be a long, tiresome and hectic one for the new wigs till positive improvements are put in place.

ELECTION IS NOT A DO OR DIE AFFAIR

I appreciate the fact that Nigeria has experienced 15years of un-interrupted democratic dispensation for the 1st time in our National history. Though there has been some slight economic improvement, the truth must be told that several of our political leaders came into power through the do-or-die approach. If critically checked, several have sacrificed one life or thing to an unknown god even though they claim to know the true God. Several have shed innocent blood and those lives are crying for veangance in the secret. Come to think of it, is winning of election worth the blood of any Nigerian citizen? I guess no! If no, then we all must desist from this do-or-die approach of winning election. I'm I saying that the politicians are the only suspects, no! The masses have not helped matters either as their mouth have caused much harm than good, killing innocent lives who have the heart of selfless service, just to demoralize and discourage them from contesting. As far as I know, politics should be a privilege to serve and not to be served. If that is the ideology for which our political sysytem is based, why then do you need to consult a medium, shed innocent blood, just to win an election? If you are in it, you must desist from such because everyday may be for the thief, but one day certainly will be for the owner. God who is the owner of your soul will demand of it someday. What will you have to present to the one who borrowed you a life, I mean your very life? You may hide under the umbrella of a ministry or religious leader, claiming to be his spiritual son or daughter. The question is, does God Almighty, the owner of your soul and that of your spiritual god-father, recoginizes both of you? If no, its time you turn a new leaf. Its time to pause and surrender that life to God. For one day, politics will be over and you will be left to face the righteous judge, all alone. May you not be caught on the losing side. God bless Nigeria our dear nation.
