HOW FAR IS THE JOURNEY TO THE PROMISED LAND?

“While waiting for a Moses to lead us to the Promised Land, we have forgotten how to walk.”
- Wendell Johnson
Young lawyers enter into the legal profession expecting to find a land filled with milk and honey, due to the time, hard work, expensive books and ‘plenty reading’ they put in to be a learned member of the Bar.  It is the perception that once one becomes a lawyer, all the years of hard work would be rewarded in kind. Though not far from the truth, but this has become a mirage in the Nigerian legal system. A new wig freshly called to the Bar must understand that the profession is not a promised land in itself but the beginning of the journey.
The young lawyer’s friends i.e. the young generation in the society constantly ask difficult but constructive questions, like “why does it take more than 10 years to finally dispose of a case from commencement to appeals?” “How come as a Nigerian I don’t require legal services except when taken to court or in police custody?” “How is it possible for one to steal a car and get three years’ imprisonment while another offender steals N1 billion and pays a fine of N750,000?” Unsatisfactory or unconvincing answers to these everyday questions have led to the populace losing confidence in the judiciary and in turn inhibits the improvement of the legal profession.
What truly is responsible for the slow progression of a young lawyer in the legal profession? This writer does not align himself with the school of thought that low monthly wages is the major reason for the slow progression of new wigs in the legal profession. While the average pay check of a young lawyer is appalling and needs review and increment, a young lawyer’s source of income should not be restricted to monthly pay checks.
Every young lawyer in the legal profession cannot be paid six digits monthly as that is only akin to stopping a train by standing in front of it. The true value of a lawyer is in his skills and ability to use the skills to his benefit. One must understand that the legal profession favours some differently than others. Some young lawyers are well paid by reputable law firms, others are employed by multi-nationals and some just have to walk their way up the legal ladder by their wit and passion for the profession.
The journey to the promised land as envisaged by a new wig is farther than expected because the judicial framework of attaining justice in Nigeria is old-fashioned as it is not at par with the contemporary realities of the 21st century. The provisions of the law used in the distant past when crime rates were low, the population was far below 160 million Nigerians and the economy was not as challenging as it now is, and still the same is used today though with minor amendments. Take for instance, some laws still have fines of N20 (twenty Naira) as punishment.
In current political turf, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria intends to seek legal redress against his suspension with his tenure coming to an end barely four months from today. One is forced to ask if it is possible with our current congested courts, to get an interpretation of the legality or illegality of the acts of the president within four months. Politicians have now taken to using the honourable courts as a political delay strategy: ‘By the way when would he get judgment, even if he gets judgment, we would appeal’.
This has in turn affected the mindset of the populace from seeking redress from court, the Nigerian citizen doesn’t really see the significance of engaging the services of a lawyer as they feel it’s only a waste of time and resources. Those who opt for the services of a lawyer are comfortable with the services of the old wig compared to the new wig, and they cannot be blamed as such is the reality of the Nigerian society.
With or without adequate monthly wage, the legal profession with its fertile pool of knowledge has the capacity to provide for the basic amenities of a new wig without such young lawyer having to wait 5- 7 years in practice.
The Nigerian legal frame work needs a complete reformation, reorganisation and restructuring. Certain laws need be repealed and more efficient ones enacted. More courts with specialized jurisdiction should be established like a court for electoral offences, money laundering and embezzlement; certain cause of action should be given accelerated hearing et al.
Nigeria is a country blessed with the financial, human and intellectual resources to have the best legal framework in the continent and yet is still far from such achievement.
The journey to the promised land will continue to be a long, tiresome and hectic one for the new wigs till positive improvements are put in place.

ELECTION IS NOT A DO OR DIE AFFAIR

I appreciate the fact that Nigeria has experienced 15years of un-interrupted democratic dispensation for the 1st time in our National history. Though there has been some slight economic improvement, the truth must be told that several of our political leaders came into power through the do-or-die approach. If critically checked, several have sacrificed one life or thing to an unknown god even though they claim to know the true God. Several have shed innocent blood and those lives are crying for veangance in the secret. Come to think of it, is winning of election worth the blood of any Nigerian citizen? I guess no! If no, then we all must desist from this do-or-die approach of winning election. I'm I saying that the politicians are the only suspects, no! The masses have not helped matters either as their mouth have caused much harm than good, killing innocent lives who have the heart of selfless service, just to demoralize and discourage them from contesting. As far as I know, politics should be a privilege to serve and not to be served. If that is the ideology for which our political sysytem is based, why then do you need to consult a medium, shed innocent blood, just to win an election? If you are in it, you must desist from such because everyday may be for the thief, but one day certainly will be for the owner. God who is the owner of your soul will demand of it someday. What will you have to present to the one who borrowed you a life, I mean your very life? You may hide under the umbrella of a ministry or religious leader, claiming to be his spiritual son or daughter. The question is, does God Almighty, the owner of your soul and that of your spiritual god-father, recoginizes both of you? If no, its time you turn a new leaf. Its time to pause and surrender that life to God. For one day, politics will be over and you will be left to face the righteous judge, all alone. May you not be caught on the losing side. God bless Nigeria our dear nation.

What are your Intentions?

Your intentions can be enormously powerful, yet they must be clear, specific and meaningful. If you just have a vague idea of the results you intend, the results you actually get will have little value.

Decide what you wish to do today, or this month, or this year, and make it precise. In order to be fully committed, you must know exactly what you’re committed to doing.

The more clearly you visualize your intentions, the more powerful you make them. When you can see exactly where you’re going, you can also find realistic and workable ways to get there.

The power of your intentions also comes from the strength of purpose behind them. When they’re solidly connected to what’s meaningful in your life, then you’ll put your best efforts into making those intentions happen.

Your intentions are powerful precisely because they enable you to focus and harness your substantial energy. Your intentions bring results because they compel you to create those results.

Make them clear and meaningful, and give your intentions the power they deserve. They’ll push you forward in creating the great life you deserve.

Highlighting SELF in Employment

Investopedia defines Self Employment as a situation an individual working for himself/herself instead of working for an Employer that pays a salary.

The Major difference between being Employed and being Self Employed is doing it by Your-Self. An Employee Signs a Contract, has contracted hours, an Employer to answer to, deadlines to beat and targets to meet up with. The job role is cut out for them, all they have to do is, do their Job, get paid and hope to retain their Employment. But as we all know, Job Security cannot be guaranteed. So why not Employ YourSelf?

Self Employment, has to do with Employing your-Self and Being in Charge of the Success of your Business. This is not as easy as many assume, it is however Doable.                                                                                                                                                                                                                             When your Self Employed, your success is dependant on how well you manage your Time, resources and Business. You have to Believe in your Self, take your Self Employment seriously, and be willingly to put in efforts to Stir your Business to Success. I am talking sleepless Nights, Sacrifices both Personally and financially. Could be likened to raising a baby.

In theory, 90% of people will prefer to be Self Employed rather than Employed, but in reality the effort and discipline required is enormous, and cannot compared with the latter.

There is a lot you have to do by your-SELF like Thinking for your-SELF, come up with ideas by your-SELF, make and take decisions by your-SELF. Some days, you are motivated to and other days not so much. However, because its up to you(SELF) you would need to generate the inner strength to keep your-SELF and Business moving forward.

In Self Employment, it takes a while to set up, develop, be fully Established and arrive at the Set objectives. The Growing process can be frustrating, but will develop in you two MUST have Qualities for Success, Persistence and consistences.

It may take a while for your Service/product to sink in the hearts of Customers and gain their loyalty. However, never be Afraid of Starting Small. Stick with it regardless of All Odds then a Miracle will eventually happen if you believe. Believe in your- Self, your Product and Services. Anything and Everything is possible if your Believe. And if its going to be, its going to be up to YOU(SELF). Yes YOU CAN....

  Helpful Tips In Self Employment
*Be Diligent in handling your SELF

*Discipline your-SELF, to avoid distractions.

*Set Target for your-SELF.

Push your-SELF to the limit, as there are no limits except the once you set your-SELF.

*Create the Right working Environment for your-SELF.

*Set work times for your-SELF, and discipline your-SELF to abide by them.

*Motivate your-SELF by reminding your-SELF why you decide to be SELF Employed.

*Educate your-SELF, Knowledge is power and timeless and shouldnt necessary be done in a classroom. Thanks to the internet and Google.

*And finally Pay your-SELF.

Think like, "THERE IS NO BOX".

Society has created a box for us as individuals that tell us exactly how we should behave, where we should get jobs, and how we should live. Most of us fall prey to this boxed in life, while a very few of us are able to escape.

Luckily, I was able to evade a life of living in the box at an earlier age than most people. I was 17 years old when I quit my first job and decided to go against everything society believed in.

I quit, created my own job as a high school senior, and found success on my terms. Society told me I should focus on my studies because creating a business is risky so I will fail.

Instead of letting societies words deter me to a life of unhappiness and being average, I decided to challenge their beliefs. I worked harder than ever to succeed on my own terms doing what I wanted to do.

Two years after creating my company, I had over 15 employees working for me, hundreds of clients, and the satisfaction of escaping the box. I sold my company shortly after and made my journey out of the box.

Beat The Odds

Just like me, millions of success stories have beaten the odds and accomplished their goals. Society laughs at those who want to become a cook, artist, or professional baseball player.

They laugh because they are taught from an early age that the only way to live a happy and successful life is to get good grades, study hard, and find a job where they get paid well.

Society says that, but I do not. Good grades means you can memorize well (something anyone can do), studying hard means that you spend your time reading school books instead of life books, and a well-paying job is also easily replaceable.

The greatest success stories such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerburg, and many others have proven that you don’t need a fancy degree or tons of working experience to succeed. I didn’t have an MBA, tons of money, or any experience when I started my business.

That didn’t stop me from succeeding. If you can tune out what the world says and stay true to your beliefs, you can achieve anything.

Escaping The Box

Escaping the box isn’t always easy because the people closest to you often drag you into the box. Growing up, my parents believed in a traditional path to success.

They said I needed to get the best grades, study hard, and get accepted into a top university. If I failed to do any of the three things, it meant I would be on a path to fail.

I didn’t get the best grades, I rarely ever studied, and I didn’t get accepted into a top university. However, I was defying their beliefs and societies beliefs simultaneously by succeeding on my terms.

I had escaped the box. My story of escaping the box was quite majestic. I got a job at the age of 15 working as an assistant/project manager. I was excited when I started, but I lost purpose very quickly.

I was working solely to make enough money to have a good time with my friends. I didn’t care about doing the job right and I would never do this job unless I got paid.

I struggled through my cubicle job for 2 years before finally realizing this was not the path for me. During those 2 years, I was hoping to get a business degree that would get me a “nice” job at Corporate America.

However, 2 years of working in a cubicle had taken everything out of me. I knew I couldn’t sit there and slave away for 40-50 years hoping to work hard enough to retire by 65.

I quit; started my own company, and I had officially escaped the box.

Conclusion

Most people that are trapped in the box are frustrated with their situation, but don’t have the courage to escape. If you don’t like your situation, change it. Don’t be trapped in the box for the rest of your life when there is a world of opportunities awaiting you.
